What should be done in case of Burns?

Pour water  immediately. Continue pouring water till burning sensation subsides. Water cools the skin and reduces further damage to skin. Thereafter seek the advice of your family physician.

What should not be done in case of Burns?

Rubbing ice, application of curd, ink or coloured ointment should be avoided.

When is hospitalization necessary?

 
Burns above 10% in children and 15% in adults require admission in hospital. Burns on Face, hands, private parts and electric burns need special care of Plastic Surgeon.

Why it is called Plastic Surgery?
 
The word plastic is derived from Greek word ‘plastikos’ meaning ‘moulding’. The plastic surgeon moulds body tissues to give desired shape and hence the term ‘Plastic Surgery’. It has nothing to do with plastic material we use in our day to day life.

Cosmetic Surgery is a branch of plastic surgery that aims to improve / enhance the look of a person.

What is sex- change surgery?

 
Alteration of sex of healthy body to meet the body image is called sex change surgery. It is done only in Transexual case where there is disharmony between anatomical sex and psychological sex.
